Twenty-three cadets have officially graduated from the 125th class of the Mercyhurst University’s Municipal Police Training Academy, stepping into roles that will help meet Pennsylvania’s growing need for law enforcement officers.
This milestone marks the completion of an intensive training program designed to prepare cadets for careers in policing. The program includes instruction in communication, physical fitness, police-community relations, and both criminal and constitutional law.
The graduation ceremony featured remarks from Erie County District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz, who praised the cadets for their hard work and dedication. Bill Hale, the academy’s director, noted a significant shortage of officers across the state, with 2,600 positions expected to be open next year.
Cadets like Justin Fuller and Miranda Shafer were motivated by a desire to serve with purpose and make a positive impact. Shafer shared that her inspiration came from seeing firsthand what police officers do during a ride-along with her father, who serves in Erie.
Many of the new graduates already have job offers, ready to begin their work protecting and serving their communities. Their training and commitment come at a crucial time as departments across the Commonwealth look to fill vital roles.
