Eight people were taken to the hospital after a school bus crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Plum on Friday evening. The buses, carrying North Allegheny School District marching band members, were headed to a football game at Norwin High School when the accident occurred around 5:45 p.m.
Students and Adults Hospitalized
According to North Allegheny Superintendent Brendan Hyland, the crash involved two district buses. Six students with minor injuries and two adults were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Allegheny Health Network confirmed that two of the three patients it received were released later that night. Other students were treated on-site and cleared by emergency responders.
Fender Bender Blamed on Traffic Incident
Hyland described the school bus crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike as a fender bender. A witness said a truck cut off the lead bus, forcing the second bus to hit it from behind when it couldn’t stop in time. The scene unfolded near the Oakmont Plum Service Plaza, where EMS quickly responded.
Quick Response and Community Support
All parents of the students involved were contacted, and school officials praised the professionalism of first responders, band volunteers, and district staff. The football team had arrived safely at the stadium before the crash happened.
Minor Injuries, Major Relief
Though the crash caused concern, no life-threatening injuries were reported. The school district and emergency teams acted swiftly to ensure student safety following the school bus crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
