A tragic ambush in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, has left one woman dead and two state troopers injured. The incident unfolded Thursday afternoon in Thompson Township when troopers were responding to reports of gunfire.
Authorities say the victim, 57-year-old Lori Wasko, was found dead before the responding officers came under fire themselves. The suspect, identified as 61-year-old Carmine Faino, is believed to have killed Wasko before targeting the officers.
Troopers Ambushed While Responding to Reports
When Trooper Joseph Perechinsky and Trooper Williams Jenkins arrived at the scene, they were immediately met with gunfire. Faino allegedly shot Perechinsky twice in the chest or torso area and Jenkins twice, once in each arm. Despite their injuries, the troopers were able to seek help and hold their ground until additional units arrived.
Pennsylvania State Police units quickly attempted to set up a safety perimeter and deploy a drone to assess the situation. However, the suspect reportedly fired on the drone as well, further complicating the standoff.
Negotiation Attempts Turn Deadly
The Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team was called in to handle the escalating threat. Officers made attempts to negotiate with Faino in hopes of a peaceful surrender. Despite these efforts, Faino continued to pose a danger to those at the scene.
